When I first started investing in a pension plan over thirty years ago, company financial advisors controlled the investments and I trusted their management of the pension funds. A few years later the company gave us an option to transfer our pension investments to a 401k plan. I sought the advice of a company leader who recommended I transfer my pension funds to the 401k plan as I would have control of where to invest my money for potentially far greater returns. I followed his advice but this terrified me as I didn't trust myself to make the right investment decisions. Three decades later, my 401k has suffered substantial losses a few times, and has had some great returns other times. I always thought it would be great if I could make investments that allowed for a more stable and steady increase without the significant downturns.
