Been using RTP FCU since 2003, maybe it was 2004 but I’m pretty sure 2003. 20 years. They’ve made plenty of money off of me from my loan for a vehicle, my credit cards, my overdraft protection account.
They had me fill out a form waaaaay back, over 15 years ago to turn off the “courtesy pay” function that they have. This way, if you don’t have the funds in your account, for whatever reason, when you go to make a transaction, you just get rejected at the register or you get a notice from Amazon, or whoever telling you that the transaction was declined. If you do not fill out that piece of paperwork and hand it to them, they will cover the purchase for you, but they’ll charge you $32. For every purchase.
Well, they moved locations, and when they move locations, they must’ve lost my signed form. That’s what I was told. Rather than let me know that it was lost. They just turned the courtesy pay function back on. So I was very surprised when I’m getting charged all kinds of money instead of just being declined at a certain point when I didn’t realize that my account didn’t have money in it. So I called and asked them why because I had signed a piece of paper to turn the courtesy pay function off well over a decade ago. Anyway, that’s when they told me all your paperwork must have gotten lost in the move. Which is frustrating enough as it was because they refused to refund me any of those fees, even though I had filled out that piece of paperwork, telling them to not cover my expense, if I didn’t have the money in the account. So the next step is to fill out that paperwork again, which I did, which I was told to do if I didn’t want them to keep doing a courtesy pay and charging me money. That was April. I have three charges from them today for courtesy pay.
The reason I didn’t have money in the account is because of where I get paid from, no fault of my own just a late deposit into my account. They don’t care that I already filled out the form (twice) And turned it into them like I was instructed to do so that I wouldn’t get hit with any more courtesy fees. They refused to refund any of it. Doesn’t matter the situation the circumstances nothing. Just nope doesn’t matter that we did not do what we said we would do. Doesn’t matter that we still did not turn off courtesy pay even though you’ve told us to a second time in writing. You still have to pay Almost $100 in fees for covering small payments for you. Even though I put more money in my account to get it to where it needed to be before the business day ended.
I would not use this Credit Union. They are predatory. The manager that I spoke to does not care about my situation, does not care that I did exactly what she told me to do back in April, and I’m Having the same things going on. Stay away from Credit Union. It’s trash.

Worst service ever. Opened a savings account with some amount while taking a car loan. After closing the car loan they took all my money saying “low participation fee” when asked how can we make transactions on savings account when there were no checks or debit card and never got the proper answer. And in first place they never said we need to make transactions even in savings account. Had account with other credit unions but never faced this scenario. Be careful with this credit union.

Really enjoyed watching the process of this location being built. The final product was fantastic. Finally go the chance to go in after a Meet and Greet at my employer. I worked with one of their great employees, Mike Hill. It was an absolute pleasure. Very professional guy and was able to help me out a lot. I'm happy to be a new member, and I'm happy I get to drive by their building every morning.

We've been with RTPCU for 12+ years. I have no issue with the people that work there. They've all been good to work with. My problem with RTPCU is their extraordinarily low savings account interest rates. They only offer .01% for a savings account. That's not a typo. It's not 1%, it's not even .1%. It's .01%. They refer to this as their "dividend rate".

I'll say up front this is not a plug for Ally Bank. It's to make people aware that there are much better interest rates out there. Ally Bank just happened to be the bank I went with after a lot of research. With that said, here's some background related to why I moved my individual checking account to Ally and why my wife and I moved most of our savings to Ally.

I had moved my individual checking account from a well-known bank (not RTP) to Ally Bank as a test to see how I'd like using a strictly online bank. After a few months, I was hooked Great website, easy to use, online chat, easy to set up online payments, and much better interest rates than RTP. So, after a few months, I talked my wife into moving most of our money from RTPCU to Ally Bank. We haven't regretted it for a second.

I just went back through our statements since we joined RTPCU and looked at what we had earned in interest since we opened our account. Then I looked at the interest we made at Ally in just the first 6 months there. In 12 years, we made right around $100 in interest at RTP. In the FIRST SIX MONTHS at Ally, we made $50. Let that sink in. In just 6 months at Ally, we had already made half of what we made in interest in the previous 12 YEARS at RTPCU.

RTPCU still only pays .01% interest on their savings account, while Ally has moved from 1.25% to 3% just this year alone. Unless you have a real need for a physical bank, I highly recommend Ally Bank.

Another thing that really rubbed us the wrong way was that they built this beautiful new facility in RTP and moved all employees from their old location in RTP to this new location. BUT, they chose NOT to build a secure room to store safe deposit boxes (which they had at their old location in RTP). So now, customers in the area are forced to drive to their location on Harrison Ave. in Cary. And no one could explain to me why they did this. We ended up closing out our safe deposit box not only for that reason, but also because we found out there are serious risks to storing personal belongings in a safe deposit box. I think most people don't understand that banks have limited liability when it comes to safe deposit boxes (we didn't know this at the time). If items in your safe deposit box are lost, misplaced or destroyed, you're generally out of luck. You can use Google to research this yourself.

Apparently Google won't allow URLs in a review, so go to Experian's website (experian com). Once there, use their search tool and search for "safe deposit box". The first link will be "Do you need a safe deposit box". There's a lot of good info there about the downsides to safe deposit boxes. Be sure to read the section about what could happen if you don't pay the yearly fee/rent for your safe deposit box.

Great local credit union. Solid online banking considering the size of the organization. Highly recommend refinancing your auto loan with them. Just be sure to have them electronically draft payments from your other bank if that is how you want to operate. If you don’t and use bill pay, they have a habit of cashing checks later than your due date but not enough to impact your credit score.

Bonus, they unironically use the meme “hide the pain Harold” as an actual stock photo

Very bad customer services representative took my social card info and bank info and never paid my bill just left my information laying around for someone else to steal instead of just processing my payment while we was on the phone together. Worst place ever to do business with
