My wife and I decided to try a tax accountant for the first time back for our 2021 tax year. So, we found Sylvia via Yelp.

Big red flag: cluttered desk with papers piled up. We decided to ignore this. Big mistake.

We got all the paperwork she requested to her, and paid her fees. She asked me to come in to sign some additional paperwork. After travelling cross-town to meet, she was a no-show to the meeting--the office was closed, and no one was inside. I tried calling, and got no answer.

We were ghosted, and since we were relocating to another city, we didn't have the time to invest on re-connecting.

Some months later, after moving, and having no idea what the status of our return was despite paying her fees upfront, we were able to re-connect via email. She claimed that she tried to contact us earlier, but we have no record of this attempted contact.

We sent the necessary signed documents, but she was either confused or just disorganized, because she asked twice more for the documents to be signed, although we had to remind her that we sent her those signed documents.

Second big red flag: Misspelling names, making typos, and making grammatical errors in email communications. If she isn't competent in simply writing emails without errors, how could we trust that she wasn't making errors in our taxes?

It was reduced to sending screenshots to re-assure her that said documents were signed and sent. She ended up being curt in her email response, never acknowledging her error or apologizing for it, or the many inconveniences she caused us.

In summary, we paid her in full, she no-showed a meeting, ghosted us, led us to worry about the status of our tax return, made no prompt effort to re-connect, never acknowledged or apologized for ghosting us, asked for the same documents multiple times, and was rude in her response to all this, all while being disorganized and lacking decent writing skills.

It was a terrible first experience with a tax accountant. Although this occurred over a year ago, I felt it necessary to warn potential future clients against considering her for tax services.
