Mr. Clarke and his long-standing team of accountants have been preparing my taxes for many years. Chuck is by far one of the most skilled CPSs in the field of taxes and I couldn't imagine his firm not handling my returns. He is not only knowledgeable and efficient but also professional, thorough and patient. How does a person really know if they have a great CPA, one that is significantly better than a general accountant, when having their taxes prepared? I am one of the fortunate people who doesn't have to wonder since having the answer provided to me. And as a result, I will never have any firm other than CW Clarke, LTD prepare my tax returns. Chuck has worked as my CPA for many years but he hadn't always provided electronic filing as his firm does currently. A number of years ago, I wanted to have my return filed electronically and brought it to an accountant who offered the electronic filing service. This general accountant prepared the tax returns and business quarterlies of a friend of mine and so I made an appointment with my stack of documents prepared forms to be electronically filed. The gentleman was very professional and said he needed to review the return with me before filing it in the event of any questions that might arise. As he flipped through the many pages, I became a bit skeptical when he appeared puzzled by a few things such as the overall number of pages contained in the return and his comments that many of the pages weren't necessary. I informed him that the return was prepared by my long standing CPA and that I had confidence in his work. A few minutes later he asked me about a ROTH IRA. I told him that I had never purchased one and didn't have a great deal of information about them. He told me that my CPA should have recommended that I purchase a ROTH and cited the advantages. He then said I could still purchase one from him and it would be credited on the return. I told him that my CPA had informed me that I did not qualify for the ROTH. The accountant denied the information, and looked confused while he checked manuals and reference material for an answer. After a considerable wait, the accountant discovered that Chuck was correct and that based on my earnings, I did not qualify for a ROTH. He apparently was not aware of the income restrictions and I will never forget the look of distress on his face as he obviously thought of the number of clients that he had recommended buy the instrument and deduct the investment that may not have been eligible. When I left his office I called my friend whose taxes were done by the accountant and learned that he had purchased a ROTH with the understanding it would be tax deductible. Within a matter of weeks my friend was audited by the IRS because of the ROTH deduction. Rather than dealing with the accountant, he hired Chuck to handle the audit and then moved his business to Chuck after that incident. I've often wondered how many people were subjected to audits as a result of the error made by the accountant. I never had to wonder if I had the best person preparing my returns or whether the additional cost was money well spent to which I assure you most certainly is.
