This is for the rental side of Chalk & Gibbs, not the insurance side. We had the displeasure of staying at one of the homes that Chalk & Gibbs manages (we've learned recently that the home is being sold and no longer rented out). From day 1, we had issues, including; heating/cooling, water bursts (and water dripping everywhere, causing our bills to rise significantly), a fence that was never repaired or worked on, a back and front yard full of fleas, a home full of roaches (and fleas), walls peeling, black mold, and more. Every time we'd call and voice our concerns, we were basically told "no one else has had these problems but you". Our electric bill (in the dead of winter, without heat because the furnace didn't work) was still over $500. When we called about the heating not working, we got told that we were lying (we have proof we weren't, including photos of the heating system being on and not raising the temp). Then when we threatened legal action and to withhold rent due to tenant rights, we were told "just buy some space heaters". We did that, and plugging up more than two would cause all of the power to go out because the grid couldn't keep up. So basically, five people had to huddle in one room in order to not freeze to death during the small snowstorm we had this season (2024-2025). Every week in the year that we lived in the house seemed to bring more problems, and every week we were dismissed. We've had rats and other animal issues in the crawl space (that was poorly patched, so we had rat droppings in our bathrooms and kitchen). We've had to turn off our water for almost 48 hours because a pipe burst and we weren't taken seriously, and the home only had one valve to shut it off and keep it from leaking. I could go on and on with the stories. Basically, there are so many things we had to pay for that we should not have had to, including pest control (including two flea bombings that were hundreds each), insulation, window coverings to keep frost away, and so much more. We were also told from some maintenance men working on the house that the foundation was crumbling and the house shouldn't be standing (they also said "At this rate, it won't be standing for much longer"). That is incredibly scary to hear when you have a child in the home that relies on a safe and healthy environment. We were so happy to find a home that was only $300 more per month, but almost brand new, with a landlord that actually cares about the well being of their tenants, and a yard that our dog can play in without being infested with fleas. We've also gotten sick much less, which confirms our suspicions that there was indeed mold in the home, and most likely other issues too. I believe Chalk & Gibbs knew there were issues but never wanted to admit it, because it seems they've dropped the landlord (and the home we rented) from their website and the landlord has now listed the property for sale now that we've left. So this is a warning to anyone who comes across 209 N 8th St, Morehead City, DON'T purchase or rent unless you plan on tearing the place down and starting over. Otherwise, it's not worth the hassle.
