My wife and I recently had two separate experiences attempting to purchase homes listed by Ryan Hodge of First Texas Brokerage Company. In both cases, we were pre-approved buyers using a VA-backed loan. Unfortunately, we encountered what we believe were practices that unfairly impacted our ability to utilize this earned benefit.
There seemed to be a clear bias against VA loans. In one instance, we were told our offer would only be considered if we switched to a conventional loan or signed a waiver agreeing to cover any appraisal shortfall with no renegotiation—terms we were not comfortable with. When we declined, we were informed our offer would not be accepted because the sellers did not feel comfortable with the VA appraisal process. This occurred even though we were fully pre-approved and made a competitive offer.
VA loans are in place to protect Veterans and ensure homes are priced fairly in the market and not inflated. We felt disadvantaged not because of our finances, but because of the type of loan we were using. It was disheartening to feel as though our status as Veteran buyers put us at a disadvantage in the homebuying process.
While we respect that sellers and agents can make their own decisions, we believe all buyers—especially those using VA loans—should be treated fairly and without bias. I hope others in similar situations will be given a more equitable opportunity to purchase a home.

Deanna Reese is one of the most amazing people I have ever had the pleasure to work with. She exudes professionalism and always goes the extra mile to make sure that her clients are informed as much as possible. She helped me sell my home and could have doubled up on the commission when it was time to buy but instead passed me off to another agent that Deanna thought had a better knowledge of the area I was interested in. I thought that was really cool because I would have absolutely used her again and she could have probably gotten an easy commission off of it since I was on a time crunch to buy. The fact that she would rather have me paired up with an expert in the area than make some easy money really should tell you everything you need to know.

If you do decide to use her, don't be afraid to ask her opinion on things. It's one of the most important times in your life whether you are buying or selling and she will make sure you make the right choices to fit your needs without being pushy about it.
