This is a tough one as I really want to like Tracy - she’s a competent tax accountant. Unfortunately, her communication skills are abysmal, and she doesn’t seem capable of acknowledging it or how much it matters.

Twice now, I have sent my financial information to her well ahead of April and received no confirmation that it was received or that she plans to file it. When I eventually reach back out to inquire about this, her reply is always comically oblivious to the issue, saying she’ll get to my taxes as soon as she can, citing how busy she is during tax season (a given for tax professionals), and taking no accountability or even addressing the communication issue I raised. The previous year, she didn’t reach out again until after 6pm on April 14th with a list of urgent and important questions, and I assume this year would have gone similarly if I had stuck with her.

She clearly has a lot on her plate, but of course, there are plenty of simple solutions that could be set up during the off-season. She could set up automated confirmation emails, she could delegate to an assistant, or she could simply turn down new clients when she’s beyond her capacity. But this would all require her to value communication and empathize with the experience of her clients, which she clearly doesn’t.

While she has generally been likable in person, her email practices aren't the full extent of her communication failures. She has been condescendingly ignorant when it comes to business and wealth management. She has brushed off legitimate financial concerns without properly understanding them. And she seems to have too much pride to take responsibility for her mistakes.

She’s likely a numbers person as opposed to a people person, and she’s probably an entrepreneur because she’s too proud and stubborn to work for someone else. I can relate to this, but when you’re the client-facing head of a firm, people skills matter at least as much as the numbers.
